Ten days after the Independent newspaper decided to end print production, the largest British newspaper, magazine and digital publisher Trinity Mirror announced the launch of the New Day newspaper. The New Day will be launched on the 29th of February and is the UK’s first new national newspaper for 30 years.

Elizabeth Holloway, the spokesperson for Trinity Mirror, told Asharq Al-Awsat that the decision to launch New Day is “an attempt to revitalise the printed press which is experiencing a decline in sales in light of the growth of digital journalism”. She added that it is also an attempt to fill the gap in the print press and that the decline in sales of it is “due to an element of dissatisfaction with what is available to readers. They still like newspapers, they are not switching everything online, but actually they were finding that none of the papers available at the moment address their needs, so we thought about putting something together that does address those needs”.

Holloway revealed that the New Day newspaper will not have an online presence and that the company has chosen not to create a website for it. She added that articles published in the paper edition will not be published online and that “there are many digital news websites that are doing really well including our own site (mirror.co.uk) which we are always developing. What people want from a paper is actually quite different- it’s having an edited and curated product where you have a beginning and you have an end”. However, the paper will have a marketing presence on social networking sites.
