GCC Security Bodies Prepare for Largest Anti-Terror Exercise

Manama – The Kingdom of Bahrain announced on Sunday the arrival of the first Gulf security units that will take part in the GCC joint mobilization exercise scheduled to kick-off this week.

The drill, titled “Arabian Gulf Sea 1”, was approved by the GCC interior ministers as part of efforts to confront regional challenges.

Scheduled to begin end of October, the drill aims to enhance the combat readiness of the GCC security forces to deal with potential emergencies, especially terrorist attacks.

The exercise also aims to cement regional coordination and cooperation within the framework of a GCC security agreement.

In exclusive remarks to Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, Bahrain’s Public Security Chief Major- General Tariq Hassan Al Hassan said that the joint exercise will promote the ability of GCC States to fight terrorism.
He added that the security drills will be held every two years, as per the decision of Arab interior ministers.

This joint security exercise is the first of its kind in the Gulf region where field training will be conducted on the terrorist risks facing the region. The exercise was decided by the GCC ministries of interior during the last GCC meeting, during which Bahrain was chosen to host the first edition of the anti-terror exercise.

Security forces from various GCC countries will engage in the security exercise, which aims at enhancing the efficiency of security forces, increasing their ability to combat terrorist attacks and exchanging expertise.

All risks facing the GCC countries will be taken into consideration and there will be simulation of security threats by terrorist groups.

The purpose of this drill is to boost readiness of security forces among the GCC countries through fostering cooperation and coordination in dealing with crises and emergencies.
