Bahraini Judiciary Sets Date for Final Hearing in Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim’s Trial

Manama – Bahrain’s judiciary scheduled a hearing session in the trial of cleric Issa Qassim on February 12. A court session was held in the capital Manama earlier in the absence of Qassim and under tight security measures.

On June 20, 2016, Bahraini authorities stripped Qassim of his citizenship over accusations that he used his position to serve foreign interests and promote “sectarianism” and “violence.” He denied the allegations.

Bahraini Central Bank issued a report saying that Qasssim had about $14 million in his bank accounts. His accounts have been held. He and two of his assistants are facing trials of corruption, money laundry, harboring terrorists and other violations that threaten Bahrain’s security.

The attorney general at the technical office, Haroun al-Ziyani, said that the High Criminal Court, the fourth department, continued on Monday looking into the case, in which the three defendants were accused of money laundering and raising funds without authorization.

The designated trial convened in an open hearing, in accordance with law, and the court decided to adjourn the case until next February 12, 2017, to deliver the closing pleadings.

Accordingly, the Public Prosecution filed a request to adjourn the final hearing, so it would have enough time to prepare its pleading. The court agreed to the aforementioned, and thus decided the date of the final hearing to be on February 27, 2017.
