London-The Women and Equalities Committee in the British parliament requested Theresa May to roll out a plan to tackle the sufferings of Muslim women in the labor market by 2017.

In a report issued on Thursday, the committee highlighted the importance of achieving equality among citizens regardless of their religious background and recommended rebuilding trust with the Muslim diaspora by setting integration policies.

According to the report, Muslim women are the most economically disadvantaged group in Britain. Up to 65 percent of Muslim women are unemployed, i.e. double the unemployment rate among British women, revealed the report as it attributed discrimination for several reasons including Islamophobia and the stereotyped image of Muslim women.

The report also warned that Muslim women in Britain face a “triple penalty” impacting their job prospects: being women, being from an ethnic minority and being Muslim.

“We heard evidence that stereotypical views of Muslim women can act as a barrier to work,” the Committee Chair and Member of Parliament Maria Miller said in a statement.

“The data suggests that in communities these patterns are shifting across generations but we remain concerned that this shift is happening too slowly and that not all Muslim women are being treated equally,” Miller added.

The committee called on relevant ministries to monitor companies and employers’ adherence to employee rights and to provide required mechanisms that protect employees from discrimination. It also called for “name-blind recruitment” for all employers.

According to the report, unemployment reached 12.8 percent among Muslims compared to 5.8 percent among British people, knowing that 2.7 million Muslims live in Britain.
