Cairo- In a remarkable development, some armed men have assassinated on Saturday a high-rank officer infront of his house. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held a meeting for top government officials in which he called for increasing security in vital facilities.

A new armed group, from its part, claimed responsibility for the terrorist operation which coincided with the issuance of the first final verdict to refuse the impingement in the case of Ousted President Mohamed Morsi and other leaders in the Brotherhood.

During the meeting led by the prime minister, El-Sisi said that Egypt would not forget the “sacrifices made by the martyrs of the nation from the Armed Forces and police,” presidency spokesman Alaa Youssef said in a statement.

The meeting was held hours after “masked armed individuals shot dead officer Emad Rajaie. Yet, it is early to determine the motives behind this assassination or its link to the occurrences in Sinai,” a high-rank source in the army told Asharq al-Awsat.

Since the ousting of Morsi in July 2013, armed groups targeted several leaders in Egypt. Journalist Samia Zain al-Abdin, wife of the assassinated officer, stated that a vehicle with three terrorists in it was awaiting for her husband when he left the house.

Samia said that her husband passed away immediately after reaching the hospital, succumbing to his injuries.
