Amman – Jordan King Abdullah II met on Sunday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas within the framework of cooperation on efforts aimed at restoring the momentum to the Palestinian cause, according to a statement by the Royal Hashemite Court.

The statement added that the meeting also focused on the endeavors to launch the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, as well as the outcome of discussions between King Abdullah and US President Donald Trump in Washington last month.

The Jordanian monarch and Abbas underlined the need to relaunch “serious and effective negotiations” between the Palestinians and Israelis, based on the two-state solution, as the only means to end the conflict, as well as the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

The two leaders also underlined the importance of the Arab Peace Initiative, which was reinstated during the Arab League Summit in Jordan, as the most comprehensive framework to achieve just and sustainable peace in the Middle East.

The meeting touched on other regional developments, challenges facing some Arab countries and the means to find political solutions to the ongoing crises.

The Palestinian president, for his part, hailed efforts deployed by Jordan in supporting the Palestinian people and their righteous cause.

In the same context, member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Ahmed Majdalani said that a high-ranking Palestinian delegation would hold meetings with officials from the US administration in Washington, ahead of Abbas’ visit to the US and his meeting with Trump on May 3.

Majdalani added that the delegation would coordinate the main topics of discussion between the two leaders.
