MP Sadiq Khan, running for Mayor of London, expressed his confidence in earning voters’ trust in the upcoming Mayoral elections to be held in May. He stressed the necessity of boosting the Muslim representatives’ percentage present in the United Kingdom’s governmental and official positions.

Moreover, the Labour Candidate vowed to fight extremism by overcoming barriers between different ethnic groups in London, which is considered to be one of the world’s most diverse cities.

MP Khan, in an interview to Asharq Al-Awsat, said that if he wins the elections, he would collaborate with all different components of society including the police department, charity organizations, and the whole civil community, fighting all crimes of hate in the British capital.

The possibly future Mayor of London, in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, mentioned that he was previously subjected to Islamophobia, which is against Islam and Muslims, saying that he is completely aware of the great concerns it raises. He explained that in the long term, fighting Islamophobia will resemble the fight against extremism today. “If current barriers between communities and individuals are brought down, and they actually get to know each other, then there will be nothing to fear in the future”, he added.

MP Khan also asserted the British society’s need to condemn Islamophobia the same way anti-Semitism and racism are denounced, emphasizing that London has no place for hate-fuelled speeches.

Furthermore, the Labour Candidate clarified that it is his priority to prevent terror attacks, like the ones that struck Paris, from occurring in London. His Plan on terror prevention is to invest in police efforts within suburbs and neighbourhoods.

It is worth mentioning that MP Sadiq Khan is one of the most prominent Muslim politicians of the Labour Party, and he currently is running in fierce Mayoral elections againstthe Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith.
