Dammam – The Sultanate of Oman announced earlier this week its participation in Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Sultanate announced that joining the coalition comes as a means of bolstering the Kingdom’s leadership role in combating terrorism.

Oman’s Foreign Minister Yousef Bin Alawi, expects his country to play an important role in the political efforts to stabilize the region.

Oman, thus, became the 41st country to join an anti-terrorist coalition of Muslim countries.

Bin Alawi said that joining the coalition comes at suitable conditions, adding that he believes his country will play a positive role of Islamic countries and the efforts of Saudi Arabia in providing a suitable environment for security and stability.

During an interview with the Omani Channel, the minister said his country “has common interests with everybody, but each country has its own ways of achieving these interests and goals.”

“Within the political framework of this coalition, many goals have been achieved. We know there are current multilateral negotiations going on between Islamic countries about terrorism,” added the minister.

He pointed out that following series of talks and discussions, Oman decided to join the coalition consolidating its known role in establishing peace.

On Thursday, the Omani Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the move “comes within the common understanding of the Islamic countries and in particular the role and leadership of the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia”.

The ministry added, without elaborating, that Oman would also join hands with “brothers and friends” for regional security and peace.

Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, second deputy premier and defense minister, has received a letter from his Omani counterpart Sayyid Badr bin Saud Al-Busaidi, Minister Responsible for Defense Affairs, announcing Oman’s decision to join the Islamic military alliance to combat terrorism.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed the Kingdom’s appreciation to Oman’s leadership for its support for Saudi Arabia’s efforts in combating terrorism.

The letter was conveyed to the defense minister by Ahmad Hilal Al-Busaidi, Omani ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

Established on December 15, 2015, the alliance stated that its primary objective is to protect the Muslim countries
from all terrorist groups and terrorist organizations irrespective of their sect and name.
