Kuwait- Kuwait’s Court of Appeals resolved on Sunday the dispute over the right of al-Sabah ruling family members to run in the parliamentary elections. The court ruled that Sheikh Malek Al-Sabah’s candidacy should be dropped.

Following the ruling, the Sheikh will not be eligible to run in the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 26.

However, Sheikh Malek decided to resort to the Court of Cassation as a final attempt to override the ruling.

Kuwaiti Constitutional Expert Dr. Mohammed al-Fili told Asharq al-Awsat that the Court of Appeals’ decision should be respected.

Data reveals a large number of young candidates are eying parliamentary seats. Among 376 candidates for Kuwait’s National Assembly there are 87 young people whose ages range between 30 and 39.

However, some observers stated that they would face difficulty in competing with political blocs.

The Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) quoted young candidates as stressing the “importance of granting the youth the opportunity to prove their qualification to push for development and reform amidst regional and international challenges.”

Political Science Professor Dr. Massouma Al-Mubarak told KUNA that it is natural for new faces emerge in every election cycle. She added that many young people have found in themselves the ability to run in the elections but could not succeed in persuading the different segments of society to vote for them.

She pointed to diminishing chances of youth who present themselves as independent in light of the one vote- system.

For his part, Political Sociology Professor Dr. Mohammed Al-Rumaihi said that young people are the hope and future of Kuwait in a lot of areas, however, the political arena requires special qualities, notably wisdom, experience and foresight.
