Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday celebrations will be held in April, May and June. Although the Queen’s birthday is on the 21st of April, the royal family chose a warm day in June on which to celebrate.

The official spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace revealed the programme for celebrations during a press conference that Asharq Al-Awsat correspondents attended at the palace on Monday and said that “on the day of her actual birthday, the Queen will be at Windsor Castle, and will then tour the streets of the city to greet the British people during the day”. “During the evening, the Queen will host a banquet for members of the royal family.”

A celebration scheduled to take place in May is thought to be one of two super-sized celebrations. The spokeswoman said that “the first celebration will include a huge extravaganza in the Home Park of Windsor in which 900 horses and more than 1,500 riders and performers will participate. It will last 90 minutes”. The event is scheduled to take place every evening from the 12th of May to the 15th, and will be attended by the Queen on the last day. All tickets for the celebrations (estimated to be around 25,000) were sold hours after they were went on sale in November.

The official annual celebration of the Queen’s birthday known as Trooping the Colour will take place on the 11th of June. On this day, a celebratory parade stretching from Buckingham Palace to central London will be held, and the Queen and the royal family will travel to and from Buckingham Palace in horse-drawn carriages. The spokeswoman said that “After that, the Queen will appear, as usual, on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at 1pm sharp , to watch the RAF fly over the palace to celebrate the occasion.”
