Israel has seized the body of Bahaa Alyan, who stabbed an Israeli soldier, along with 50 others since October, and is refusing to return them to their families.
Lawyer Mohammad Alyan along with other relatives are fighting in political, judicial, and civil fields in order to mobilize local, Middle Eastern, international, and even Israeli public opinion to pressure the Israeli government to deliver them the dead bodies of their children.
Since then, Mohammad Alyan became in charge of a national campaign to restore the bodies of the martyrs. The campaign organizes, on daily basis, protests in different Palestinian cities, and its founders meet Palestinian and foreign officials. They have also formed a team of lawyers topursue the matter in Israeli and international courts.
Alyan told Asharq Al-Awsat: “We want to put into effect the legal efforts uniformly to pursue the matter,” and he added: “We are moving on steadily as we were able to extract a position from the Palestinian government to follow up the bodies’ case, and there is an increasing popular pressure”.
Alyan said: “We have tried and are still trying to reclaim the bodies of the martyrs by sending petitions to the Israeli prosecution but the answer was that the detention of the martyrs’ bodies was a political decision.”
The Israeli Central Court has formerly rejected to look into the case because the resolution was issued by the Cabinet, which decided to detain the bodies of the bombers on Oct. 14 last year, after less than two weeks of the beginning of the current revolution after a proposal made by the Minister of Security Gilad Erdan, who described the funerals as the largest in support of terrorism.
From that day, the Israeli army intends to kidnap any body of Palestinians and some areas in Jerusalem have become competition yards between the demonstrators and the soldiers so that the latter can win a body and seize it.
Nevertheless, the political powers in Israel insist on keeping the bodies despite the recommendations submitted by the security agencies to return them as they consider keeping them in Israel will lead to consequences.
