Muslim teenager calls for greater diversity in proposal to
Unicode Consortium

Jeddah- A 15-year-old teenager, Rayouf Alhumedhi, from Saudi Arabia, has decided that time is up to have hijab emoji as part of chatting apps on smart devices.

She has made a proposal to Unicode Consortium, a nonprofit that governs the creation and approval of emojis, to consider her proposal.

The Saudi teenager has gained the support of Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and if the proposal is approved, a hijab emoji could make its way to messaging apps by 2017.

This proposal is expected to face opposition from some European countries that reject the Islamic hijab in all its forms.
