London, Berlin- Following Brussels’ attacks, world leaders called for unity against terrorism. According to several European leaders, these attacks targeted Europe and its democratic values.

European Union president Donald Tusk condemned the appalling “terrorist attacks” early Tuesday at Brussels airport and a metro station.

“I am appalled by the bombings at Zavantem airport and the European district in Brussels which have cost several innocent lives and injured many others,” Tusk said in a statement.

“These attacks mark another low by the terrorists in the service of hatred and violence,” he added.

There was an emotional reaction to the Brussels bombings from European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini speaking at a joint news conference, which she cut short, in Jordan’s capital, Amman.

“It’s a very sad day for Europe as Europe and its capital are suffering the same pain that this region has known every single day – plagued in Syria, plagued elsewhere,” she said.

For his part, the Italian President Sergio Mattarella said in a statement: “We must face this decisive challenge with a common strategy that considers all aspects of the situation – security-wise, militarily, culturally, and on the cooperation and development front.”

“Liberty and the future of human cohabitation are at stake”.

On the other hand, the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, expressed his shock and concern and called for an emergency Cabinet meeting saying that Britain would offer any possible help.

“We have to meet that with everything we have,” Cameron said after the meeting he said.

“We won’t let these terrorists win.”

London police appealed for British people who witnessed the Brussels attacks to share videos and images that could help investigators.

Spain’s acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy expressed on Twitter his great concern for the situation in Belgium.

“We are following the events of what happened at Brussels airport with regret and worry. All of our support and solidarity,” Rajoy wrote.

In Belgium’s neighbor, the Netherlands, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said his government was also taking precautionary measures. “Belgium has again been hit by cowardly and murderous attacks. Our hearts go out to the victims and next of kin. The Netherlands stands ready to help and support our southern neighbors in any possible way.”

“What is needed now is that we show our collective strength and uphold the values of freedom,” he added.

In Berlin, the German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said: “In these dark hours, Europe stands together in solidarity. Belgium is not alone.”

In Denmark, Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen condemned the bombings calling them “despicable” and said that his thoughts are with the victims and their families.

President Vladimir Putin condemned the attacks and said that the fight against this evil calls for the most active international cooperation.

The Turkish Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu said, “I curse the attack in Brussels, which has once again shown the global face of terror. I offer my condolences to the government and the people of Belgium and I want to express solidarity on behalf of our people.”

“I invite all of humanity to stand united against global terror and any sort of terrorism,” he added.

Armed police have been deployed to airports, train stations, ports and border crossings around the world in the immediate aftermath of attacks in Brussels.

Flights to Belgium were suspended or diverted with the airport shut again on Wednesday, the border between France and Belgium was closed and Eurostar services in and out of Brussels were halted after up to 34 people were killed in attacks on the city’s airport and Metro station.

Train and bus stations, ports and road checkpoints were also put on high alert, with armed police on the streets in major global cities; sniffer dogs deployed and extensive border checks put in place as the ripples from the attacks were felt around the world.
