The United Nations Security Council has confirmed the former Portuguese Prime Minister and the former head of the UN High Commission for Refugees, António Guterres, as the next UN Secretary General. He will serve from the 1st of January 2017 to the 31st of December 2021. His appointment was warmly welcomed at the UN due to his vast experience at the international organisation.

Yemen’s ambassador to the UN Khalid Al-Yamani said “We look forward to Guterres’ experience contributing to and guiding the work of his special envoy to Yemen in order to make peace efforts successful and end the coup, that disturbed a successful mediation experience led by the United Nations during the period from 2011 until the end of 2014, by moving Yemen away from the dictatorship of the former president’s regime and transforming it into a democratic federal system, and putting an end to the coup carried out by the Houthis and followers of the former president.” Al-Yamani added that this should be done in accordance with “the Gulf initiative, the outcomes of the national dialogue that was sponsored by the United Nations, and the implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions related to the Yemeni situation, most notably resolution 2216”.

According to Al-Yamani, the political experience that Guterres’ gained during his time as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 – 2002, his diplomatic experience and his work in the European Union makes him “the right man to lead human aspirations to achieve goals for sustainable development, especially with regards to the fight against poverty”.
