Israel’s Nuclear Lies | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

The ridiculous way in which Israel is trying to deceive the world and convince it that it does not have nuclear weapons because it has never “admitted” to possessing them is not convincing anymore (and I do not believe that it was ever so in the first place).

The reality says Israel is the sixth country in the world that has produced nuclear weapons and one of four nuclear countries not acknowledged as ones with nuclear weapons through the known Nonproliferation Treaty (the other countries are India, Pakistan, and North Korea). Israel started the nuclear operations one year after it declared itself a state in 1948 with secret support from France, built a complete reactor and an operations plant in the 1950’s, and produced its first nuclear weapon in 1967. But this did not become public knowledge until the Israeli nuclear expert Mordechai Vanunu removed the secret cover off its nuclear program to the British press in 1986. There is a deep belief that Israel has today more than 400 nuclear warheads and the ability to deliver them by ballistic missiles, aircraft, and submarines.

Israel held in secret several nuclear tests with the racist government of South Africa in 1970’s. It established in 1952 the Israeli nuclear energy agency from distinguished individuals and Mossad intelligence team and obtained over the years very important technical and financial support, mainly from France and Britain, until 1962 when the Dimona reactor, the most famous and dangerous in Israel’s history, was built. It cost $80 million (according to a later statement by Shimon Peres), most of which were collected from the Jews in the Diaspora around the world. Mossad obtained the first uranium shipment from an Italian company by fraud and deception and it was shipped to Israel. The expenditures on and development of the Dimona reactor continued to enable it to produce between four and five nuclear warheads a day if it wanted. Israel also benefited from the emigration of some Russian and Soviet scientists following the collapse of the Soviet Union and there is a study which says that 20 percent of the Soviet scientists immigrated to Israel to work in it.

Vanunu’s exposure of Israel’s nuclear program was the biggest blow to the secrecy with which Israel shrouded its nuclear program because “he confirmed” with precise technical details the existence of the program and the nature of its products.

There is also an important book by Seymour Hersh called “The Samson Option” which was published in 1991 and in which he called in question Israel’s nuclear program and exposed secrets and the reasons for establishing it.

Israel’s ownership and possession of nuclear weapons is not a secret anymore but is clear and exposed. By continuing to deal with this rogue country with “special” laws and rules, the world, especially the Western one, is creating hatred and a feeling of injustice that justifies all consequent actions. Israel is a rogue state with distinction and if double standards continue to be used when dealing with it, then the world’s view of it will continue with more negativity as it is becoming clear with every day that passes.
