Iraqi men move a boat that was stuck on the banks of the Euphrates river in Twairij, roughly 20 kilometres east of Karbala, due to a decline in the water level after supplies were blocked by anti-government fighters who control access to a dam further upstream in conflict-hit Anbar province on April 8, 2014. Militants have held control of Fallujah, a short drive from Baghdad, and other pockets of territory for several months, the first time insurgents have exercised such open control in major cities since the peak of the insurgency that followed the US-led invasion of 2003.
