Iraq Forces Push through Mosul’s East, ISIS Militants to be Fully Dislodged Soon | ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English Archive 2005 -2017

Irbil- Iraq’s counter-terror units on Sunday continued the advance into ISIS overrun neighborhoods in Mosul’s eastern vicinity. Areas such as, Al Bakir and Al Khadraa witnessed intensified fighting as Iraq’s elite forces pushed through Hammam al-Alil, establishing control over strategic neighborhoods. Several national flags were raised over buildings of freed territory.

Nineveh’s senior security official Lieutenant-General Abed Al Qader Mohammad al Hamadani says that Iraqi forces have stormed into Mosul’s eastern neighborhoods and are making steady progress against the ultra-hardline terror group. Freeing Mosul’s east is two days away as ISIS is resorting to suicide attackers as a desperate move, Gen.Qader told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Gen. Qader clarified that Iraqi forces are making an advance throughout Mosul’s east. Special ops, counter-terrorism units and first responders are collaborating on the eastern frontier. On the northern battlefront the 16th infantry division forces liberated an area in A’weza, and entered the al-Sada area, and opened a road from Shalalat toward al-Sada in A’weza.

From the southeast front, the 9th armored division and the third brigade of 1st division forces have entered the left bank and proceeded to go inside Intisar and Judaydat al-Mufti neighborhoods, and are continuing to clear the area of the terrorists ISIS. They cut the Kirkuk-Mosul road from the Judaydat al-Mufti direction.

From the southern front, the federal police and Nineveh operation forces liberated Najira and Bakhira villages north of Hamam Al-Alil, and continue to clear Hamam Al-Alil of IEDs and mines on the roads to secure the areas and ensure people can return.

Commander of “Nineveh, We Are Coming” operations, Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Rasheed Yar Allah, announced on Friday that six neighborhoods in the eastern edge of Mosul city have been liberated from the grip of hardliners.

Pointing out that the group has inflicted heavy losses on the militant group, Lt.Gen Yar Allah said that “anti-terrorism units liberated today the neighborhoods of Malayeen, Samah, Kadra’, Karkookli, Quds, Karama in the eastern edge of Mosul.”
