Aden-Yemenia, the national airline of Yemen, resumed flights to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a suspension of around 18 months, with a first flight from Yemen’s Aden airport to the Saudi city of Jeddah.

A Yemenia Airbus arrived in Jeddah on Wednesday afternoon with 128 passengers on board for the first time since February 2015.

In exclusive remarks to Asharq al-Awsat newspaper, Aden International Airport’s Deputy Abdul Raqib Omari said that Aden Airport has resumed several weekly flights to Saudi Arabia, between Aden, Jeddah and Riyadh.

Last week, Yemen’s national carrier announced plans to resume weekly flights to Saudi Arabia every Wednesday.

Last year in November, President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi issued instructions limiting civilian air traffic from Yemen to Cairo and the Jordanian capital Amman.

Aden Airport was inflicted by severe damages as Houthi rebels and ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh have transformed it into the headquarters of military operations. The airport’s different areas were used by the rebels to store weapons.

Omari said that the airport was rehabilitated with Emirati funding.
