London- Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Abdullah al-Mouallimi has revealed that Riyadh submitted an official request to the UN to increase its inspectors in Yemen.

This Saudi step came as a result of the huge smuggling operations occurring through the ports ruled by the coup, according to the Coalition Command to Support the Legitimacy in Yemen.

Mouallimi said that Saudi Arabia expects a response from the UN on this request soon.

This coincides with a statement issued by the Yemeni government saying “Hodeidah Port, on the western coast of Yemen, is still being exploited by militias to smuggle arms and threaten the international navigation as well as to lay hands on humanitarian aid.”

The Yemeni Foreign Ministry welcomed the decision of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen to draw a plan to use alternative ports for the purpose of allowing the entry of humanitarian aid to the war-affected Yemeni provinces.

In New York, United Nations Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed urged, on Wednesday, the UN Security Council to use its diplomatic weight to put an end to the ongoing war in the country.

Ould Cheikh expressed his deep concern about the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian and economic situation amidst a worrying escalation of military operations.

“The only real way to prevent a worsening of the situation is to reach a peaceful resolution to this tragic conflict,” he stressed.

On Twitter, Ould Cheikh asserted that the military escalation and humanitarian agony won’t contribute in bringing the warring parties closer.
