London – Foreign ministers of five countries are expected to meet in London on Monday to discuss prospects of a political settlement to the crisis in Yemen.

UN Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed will brief the attendees on the outcome of his latest meetings with the concerned parties, according to the envoy’s spokesperson, Charbel Raji.

Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Raji said that the meeting would include the Sultanate of Oman, in addition to the quartet on Yemen, which is initially formed of Saudi Arabia, the United States, the UAE and the United Kingdom.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed held separate meetings on Thursday with Saudi Foreign Affairs Minister Adel al-Jubeir and GCC Secretary General Abdullatif Al-Zayani.

A statement by the GCC Secretariat General said that Zayani and the UN envoy discussed the latest political, security and humanitarian developments in Yemen, in addition to UN efforts for completion of the Yemeni peace consultations.

GCC Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Negotiations Dr. Abdulaziz Hamad Al-Uweisheq said that the envoy’s meeting with Zayani touched on latest UN efforts on the Yemeni crisis.

In comments to Asharq Al-Awsat, he said: “We have discussed two paths: the first pertains to the establishment of a ceasefire and the second focuses on a security and political agreement based on UN Security Council Resolution 2216.”

Al-Uweisheq stressed GCC support to the efforts deployed by the international envoy.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed’s latest tour in the region included Kuwait and Riyadh. He is also expected to visit Muscat, before heading back to New York to submit a report on his meetings to the Security Council, according to Raji.

A meeting on Yemen was held last month in Bonn, in the presence of US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his counterparts from Britain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
