Following the terrorist attack at a restaurant in Dhaka on 01 July which left 20 hostages dead and several injured, the Bangladeshi authorities have revealed the identity of 22 dead people of whom nine were Italian, seven Japanese, one Indian and five Bangladeshi including one US-born.

The police authority stated that the dead gunmen were members of local militant group Jamautul Mujahedin (JMB). Military commandos killed six gunmen and rescued 13 hostages alive during the attack, while the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced a two-day national mourning for the victims.

Today U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke with PM Hasina through a phone call and offered help in order to strengthen the investigation on how the young, prosperous and educated attackers were radicalized.

Police have said all six gunmen killed in Friday’s attack which was the first of its kind in Bangladesh for its scale and brutality, were locals, which distressed authorities by the obvious spread of extremist ideology in the country

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack and posted pictures of five grinning fighters in front of a black flag who it said were involved in the attack.

“The Secretary (Kerry) encouraged the government of Bangladesh to conduct its investigation in accordance with the highest international standards and offered immediate assistance from U.S. law enforcement, including the FBI,” U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.
