A man wanted for engaging in terror activities was killed in a police shootout in Saudi Arabia’s Qatif region. A police officer was also reportedly wounded in action in the Eastern Province, the interior ministry said on Friday.

The incident in the oil-rich region late on Thursday saw the suspect open fire after refusing to surrender to security forces, a ministry spokesman said.

Police fired back, resulting in the man’s death. The Saudi state-owned news agency SPA reported that the officer was hospitalized after the altercation.

Thursday’s shooting comes days after the killing by an unknown assailant of a policeman in Qatif, according to the ministry.

Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry Security spokesman reported an attack against police forces on March 7.

Qatif’s policeman Musa Dakhailallah Al-Sharari serving at the old Tarot police station upon leaving duty in his own car had come under fire from an unidentified source, resulting in his martyrdom, SPA reported.

The police authorities shortly after the attack launched criminal investigation to determine motives.
