Secretary General of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani on Thursday received the United Nations Secretary General’s special envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.

During their meeting, Secretary General Al Zayani and envoy Ould Cheikh discussed the latest political, security and humanitarian developments, in Yemen, reported Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Efforts exerted by the UN special envoy on concluding Yemeni peace consultations were also addressed.

Iran-aligned Houthis along with armed loyalists backing ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh have been running an armed insurgency in Yemen aimed at dismantling authority and the constitutionally elected government led by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.

A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen’s civil war nearly two years ago to back President Hadi after he was forced to leave the capital Sanaa.

Dr. Al Zayani had received earlier the Netherlands ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Joost Reintjes.

They reviewed bilateral relations between the GCC and Netherlands, as well as ways of enhancing them in all fields.
