Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani condemned Wednesday following a suicide attack that targeted a Saudi frigate while it was on a patrolling mission west of Yemen’s key port, Hodeida.

Dr. Al-Zayani labeled the attack as a “serious violation” to international navigation conventions in the Red Sea–not only that, but also a loud threat to maritime safety of the Red Sea, said Saudi state news agency.

The GCC chief expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia over all measures it is taking in order to stop the smuggling of firearms to Yemen, while voicing condolence to the families of the victims and to the Saudi government and people.

At least two people were killed and three others injured on Monday when vessels driven by Iran-backed Houthi insurgents attacked a Saudi warship, patrolling around Hodeida port, reported the Arab Coalition seeking to restore the constitutionally elected government in Yemen.
