Firefighters managed on Sunday to bring under control a blaze that had broken out at a residential tower that was still under construction in Dubai.

Clouds of smoke billowed over central Dubai after a fire burned for several hours in the tower near the city’s largest shopping mall.

The fire erupted around 6:30 am (0230 GMT) at the complex, which is near the Dubai Mall and a hotel ravaged by fire on New Year’s Eve in 2015, authorities said.

Civil defense services evacuated four people who were trapped by the fire, including one in serious condition, Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Ateej told Dubai television.

The Dubai government said that firefighting crews had brought the blaze under control.

It said the building was being constructed by local real estate giant Emaar.

The property has three towers, each 60 floors high, and had been due to be completed in April of next year.

Roads around the building, located in an area popular with shoppers and tourists, were closed as firefighters tackled the blaze. The Dubai Media Office Twitter account said later that the fire was under control, with cooling operations underway and no injuries reported.

Emaar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
