Facebook Inc and Twitter Inc are competing to bring every media medium under their umbrella. The two digital rivals are competing to acquire rights to stream conventional TV programming, the New York Post reported on Thursday.

Both social media giants have approached programmers about a deal for the rights to stream live TV, citing several sources familiar with the situation.

The battle to provide the best live streaming video offering started after Facebook rolled out its Live broadcast to all users in the US in January, a direct competitor to Periscope’s live streaming model.

Facebook, which is already pitching the National Football League (NFL) for digital rights to Thursday Night Football, has met with a wide range of TV executives over the past few weeks, sources told the Post.

Facebook will allegedly talk over the possibility of creating a small bundle of channels to deliver the programming, the Post also reported.

However, it was not known how Facebook would deliver the shows, or how Facebook and Twitter plan to make money for programmers who provide content for their streams, since they are built upon free models. Advertising is likely to play a huge role in this.
Facebook and Twitter could not be immediately reached for comment.
