The Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who is also the Second Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence announced that the warring parties in Yemen are close to reaching a solution to the conflict that has been ongoing for nearly a year. Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in the second part of his interview with Bloomberg News agency which was published yesterday that “There is significant progress in negotiations, and we have good contacts with the Houthis, with a delegation currently in Riyadh”. He added: “We are pushing to have this opportunity materialize on the ground but if things relapse, we are ready.”

In a related development, the Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi issued decisions regarding the republic last night. General Ali Mohsen Saleh Al-Ahmar was appointed as Vice- President of the republic and Ahmed Obaid bin Daghr as Prime Minister. As a result of these decisions, Khalid Bahah was appointed as a political adviser to the president. Previously, Bahah held both the vice president and prime minister positions.

These appointments come approximately two weeks before the start of a new round of Yemeni peace negotiations in Kuwait under the auspices of the United Nations. The Adviser to the Yemeni President Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Maflahi said in a brief statement to Asharq Al-Awsat that the presidential decisions are “an important and necessary step to eliminate the stagnation that the previous government was characterised by”.
