While the Yemen peace consultations held under the auspices of the United Nations continue in Kuwait, high ranking Yemeni sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that some international parties are taking advantage of the stalemate at the consultations by informally proposing the formation of a national unity government or a government shared with the rebels. The rebel delegation has requested for this since the start of consultations on the 21st of April, and is refusing to allow any progress to be made at the consultations unless its demand is met.

The Yemeni Minister of Human Rights Ezzedine Al-Asbahi who is also a member of the government delegation told Asharq Al-Awsat that forming a government before the coup ends is the “kind of wishes and ideas that arise outside the formal context”.

Al-Asbahi also stressed that the consultations have reached a stalemate but emphasised that significant steps cannot be made in one meeting or round of consultations. He also believes that “it is not possible to reach completely final decisions about a political or security related subject without confidence being increased first”.
