Aden, Taiz-The Saudi-led Arab Coalition is currently supervising the battles to liberate the city of Taiz from Houthi and Saleh militias, a leading official from the Popular Resistance told Asharq Al-Awsat on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi discussed the recent developments unfolding in Yemen with Anne Patterson, the assistant of Secretary of State John Kerry.

The meeting between Hadi and Patterson in Riyadh mainly discussed the economic situation in Yemen, and the measures needed to stop Houthi rebels and Saleh militias from tampering with the country’s reserves.

Sources close to the Yemeni presidency told Asharq Al-Awsat that Hadi discussed with the U.S. diplomat the recent developments and challenges in Yemen, particularly after rebels rejected all attempts to reach peace and end the coup in line with international resolutions.

Other sources said U.N. Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh is expected to kick off a new wave of actions in the coming days to revive the Yemeni peace talks.

On the battlefield, a leading figure from the country’s Popular Resistance told Asharq Al-Awsat that the “leadership of the Saudi-led Arab Coalition was currently supervising the wide-range operations to terminate the battle in the city of Taiz.”

Yemeni troops succeeded to liberate new positions previously controlled by rebel militias south of Taiz. Meanwhile, the troops continued their campaign to cleanse the areas of Ghorab and several parts of the Khamis Street.

The Taiz Military Council announced on Thursday that militias were collapsing after Yemeni troops controlled the area and succeeded to open the Dabab Street. The council said rebel militias suffered from immense losses, and therefore, started hysterically attacking the cities of Taiz and al-Turba.

Commander of the Western Front General Abdo Hamood Al Sagheer said the army and resistance were working to implement the first stage of their military operation by opening the Western access point to the city and liberate it from rebel militias.

A representative from the Taiz Province Rashad al-Ak’hali said the National Army and Popular Resistance made progress at several fronts.

Moral guidance vehicles circulated in the streets of Taiz and used speakerphones to call for a general mobilization. They called on the youth to join the National Army and Popular Resistance in all fronts and fight for the liberation of the province.
