Cairo – Germany, the strongest economy in the European Union after Brexit and France’s strong partner, appears to be in the process of restructuring its trade and economic relations for the next phase.

This comes after the British Brexit vote last year and US accusations that it is carrying out unjust trade measures, in addition to the restructuring of the international economic powers map as China seeks to revive the Silk Road initiative.

During last week’s G7 Summit in Italy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has presented herself as a strong leader in the face of the US accusations and the protectionism adopted by President Donald Trump.

Shortly after that, Merkel shocked her allies – whether in Washington or London – by saying that Europe should have control over its destiny, hinting that US and UK are no longer reliable partners.

Merkel’s statements were shocking because she has been an admirer of the US since her teenage years and she has been known for her faith in cooperation between the US and Europe.

Over the past few months, Trump and the US administration have criticized Germany and accused it of deliberately weakening the euro in order create unjust competition between German and US commodities.

While ambiguity and complication have appeared in German-US ties, the strongest economic powers in Asia – India and China – seem very interested in developing relations with Germany at the current time.
