Brussels – A member of the European Parliament stated that security cooperation between the member-states of the European Union has not reached “the desired level.”

Head of the Group of the Greens bloc MP Philippe Lamberts told Asharq Al-Awsat: “Foreign fighters are on Europe’s doorstep.”

“We should be prepared for this danger, but unfortunately we cannot really determine the numbers of those fighters and no one can control this issue,” he lamented.

“We should be diligent and intensify our border security measures,” Lamberts stressed.

He reiterated European Parliament Speaker Antonio Tajani’s warnings that fighters from Syria and Iraq could arrive in Europe, adding that security cooperation between EU member-states is so far limited to the exchange of information.

Cooperation should be “deeper”, demanded the MP.

This can be achieved between security and judicial agencies and pursuing suspected terrorists, suggested Lamberts.
