Jeddah – The restored security at the Mukalla port led to the resumption of shipping traffic especially after al-Qaeda has been conquered.

Chairman of Yemen Arabian Sea Ports Corporation Salim Ali Basamir said that Mukalla port is witnessing an active shipping activity and increased trade movement since Mukalla was liberated from Qaeda.

Basamir told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the daily ship movement carrying food supplies and oil derivatives has increased.

He added that the corporation was keen on restoring trust and offered a series of facilities needed for traders, businessmen, and shipping agencies in a manner that ensures the continuity of supplies amid difficult situations.

Chairman Basamir said that the port was able to meet the needs of the local market despite all shortages.

According to Basamir, several ships of the coalition had docked since May at the port carrying humanitarian and relief aids for citizens of Hadhramut following its liberation.

He confirmed that since June and the beginning of this month, the port has been active which led to employment of several workers.

Basamir praised the continuous coordination and cooperation of the local authority of Hadhramut presented by Lt. Ahmad bin Briek.

He added that Mukalla port is Hadhramut’s only navigational gate and all nearby governorates depend on it and that’s why Lt. Briek and local authority is working around the clock to ensure its stability and food security of all governorates.

Basamir then asked authorities to renovate and improve the port as well as include new machinery to enhance its performance. He added that the government should establish new ports in Hadhramut with international capabilities to receive giant vessels.
